The Six Dimensions of Middle Leader Success

We see six dimensions to the role of an effective middle leader. The middle leader has to be effective in:

  • Delivering
  • Teaching
  • Buffering
  • Supporting
  • Challenging
  • Scanning

Our six dimensions are described in detail in High Performers: The Secrets of Successful Schools. We also provide a self-evaluation framework for your middle leaders based on the six dimensions

Case Study

A key element of Nottingham Bluecoat School's training relationship with Alite in the last year was the Middle Leader training programme. Eight existing Heads of Department worked with an Alite consultant on training aimed at developing the six dimensions of middle leader success. The course participants were involved in Leadership "Gap Tasks", a school Leadership Project peer observation, coaching for improvement and real life case studies.

"The training has had a very positive impact on those involved and their departments especially in terms of leading learning and teaching. We are planning to run the course again for our Aspiring Middle Leaders next year"
Sue Blakeway, Assistant Headteacher, Nottingham Bluecoat School

"The Course made me realise that I am a leader of learning and teaching as well as an organiser and administrator"
Middle Leader, Nottingham Bluecoat School

"After the course, I know far better how to motivate, lead, challenge and support the staff in my department as well as handle those "difficult conversations."
